Want to know the secret to making perfect Jello layers? I’m going to show you step by step how easy it is to make these pretty gelatin cups so keep reading for my Unicorn Party Rainbow Jello Recipe.

Inspired by the Trolls Movie

One of our favorite animated movies is “Trolls” so when I had the opportunity to style a Trolls themed party for Birthday in a Box I went a little crazy with the rainbow food. Aside from the rainbow champagne slushie, this was my favorite food to create. The Trolls Movie comes out tomorrow so in honor of the DVD release I am sharing all of my rainbow food ideas I created for the Trolls party I designed last year. You can use as many colors as you want and in any configuration that works for your party theme. I chose a traditional rainbow because Princess Poppy is all about cupcakes and rainbows.

What colors to use for your layered Jell-O?

You want to start by figuring out your pattern so you know what flavors you will need to purchase. I chose the new Trolls Cotton Candy for blue, Star Wars Rebel Berry for green (not Jell-O brand but I liked the green), lemon for yellow, watermelon for pink, and cherry for red. The pink is very light and actually looks orange when layered between yellow and red which was not intentional but I think it worked out really well.

How do you make layered Jell-O cups?

Once you have figured out what kind of cups you are going to use you want to determine approximately how wide each of your layers needs to be. I took the length of the cup (not including the stem) and divided by five. Keep in mind if you measure from the top it will be a little tricky when putting in the refrigerator.

I very carefully placed each cup in the refrigerator one at a time instead off on the tray to avoid spilling.

Now that you’ve got your gelatin boxes and your cups you can get started. I highly recommend using a turkey baster to fill your cups. You have a lot more control and you are not as likely to splash the mix on the sides of the cup. Make the Jell-O according to the quick set instructions.

I only made 10 cups but this recipe will make at least a dozen depending on the type of cups you use and the width of your layers. The cups were purchased from my local dollar store.

How long do you let your Jell-O set before adding the next layer?

I guess this really depends on how cold your refrigerator is. I waited about 10 mins between each layer. Put your cups on a cookie sheet (that you have already determined will fit in your frig) and fill each cup with desired amount of mixture. Carefully place in refrigerator until gelatin has set. If you see bubbles forming (before it has set) you can pop most of them with a toothpick.

Once the first layer has set get the second layer ready. Repeat the process with each layer.

It was really hard to find the right pink so I decided on watermelon flavor. Once I placed it on top of the yellow it looked kind of orange which worked out perfectly for my rainbow theme. If you need a true pink, particularly if you plan on layering on top of yellow, I wouldn’t use watermelon.

Can you add sweet condensed milk to Jell-O?

I’ve been asked this a few times so I thought I would include it in the post. Yes, you can add sweet condensed milk to Jell-O. If you wanted to do a pink and blue cup for a gender reveal for instance and wanted to add a layer of white in between you could absolutely do that. It looks so pretty too!

The key to layering up the jelly is never to let the previous layer fully set. It should still be wobbly, not completely firm, or the next layer won't stick. How do you put fruit in jello without it sinking? ›

Cover the fruit completely with the Jell-O mixture. Shake the bowl a tiny bit, so that the Jell-O filters down to cover the fruit at the bottom of the bowl. This works the same for both the conventional and the vegan version. Alternative: Pour the gelatin into the mold and let it set for about 90 minutes.
