Gluten-Free Chex Mix Recipe: A Tasty Gluten Free Snack Mix! (1)

I used to spend my time sneaking the rice and corn cereal pieces out of my favorite snack food. Then I decided, why not make a gluten-free version for myself? And that’s what I did! Nobody likes a picker, anyways. So now that problem is solved, I may move on to world peace.

If you love recipes that are both, here are more gluten-free vegan recipes for you!

What Makes This Recipe Shine?

  • Using rice and corn Chex cereal keeps this favorite snack gluten-free
  • Adding tamari instead of Worcestershire Sauce, creates the same salty flavor, without the risk of gluten contamination
  • Pistachios and mixed nuts add crunch, flavor, and color to every bite, making this the most irresistible snack mix ever!

Key Ingredients

You can find the full printable recipe, including ingredient quantities, below. But first, here are some explanations of ingredients and steps to help you make this recipe perfect every time.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe, including substitution ideas:

  • Rice & Corn Chex — These two kinds of cereal are gluten-free and perfect for snacking.
  • Gluten-free Pretzels — I find gluten-free pretzels in the health food section of my grocery store or online.
  • Pistachios — These are my favorite nuts for this recipe because of the pop of color!
  • Mixed Nuts — Add your favorite nuts like cashews, peanuts, almonds, and more.
  • Vegan butter — Use any dairy-free margarine, vegan butter, or you can even make your own homemade vegan butter.
  • Tamari — This is a gluten-free soy sauce, which adds so much salty umami flavor.
  • Miso Paste — Using a mild miso paste is another favorite secret of mine. It’s gluten-free and adds the perfect touch of flavor. You can substitute additional salt if you can’t find it.
  • Garlic powder + Onion powder — These two together add powerful flavoring. You can substitute dehydrated onions.
  • Salt to taste — If you’d like a more salty flavor, feel free to add a sprinkle or two of salt and pepper once the dish is done.

How to Make Gluten-Free Chex Mix

I love making Gluten-Free Chex Mix. It’s really very easy to make and you can add some of your favorite ingredients, like pistachios or gluten-free pretzels to the ingredients.

Let’s get started:

  1. In a large, microwave-safe bowl combine the cereal, pretzels, and nuts.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted vegan butter, tamari, miso, garlic, and onion powder.
  3. Drizzle half of the butter mixture over the cereal and gently stir to combine. Then pour in the remaining butter mixture and again, stir the cereal to ensure it’s all coated.

  4. Place the bowl in the microwave and cook on high for 6 minutes, removing the bowl and stirring every 2 minutes.
  5. When it’s done, let it sit for a minute, then pour it onto a pan lined with parchment or waxed paper. Use a spatula to spread it out into a thin layer. The cereal will get crunchy as it cools.
  6. Transfer to a serving bowl to serve. Store in an airtight container for up to 15 to 20 days.

Storage Tips

Once the cereal mix has cooled, transfer it to an airtight container. It will keep up to 15 to 20 days at room temperature. It can be frozen, too. Transfer it to a freezer bag and freeze for up to 2 to 3 months.

Is Chex Mix Gluten-Free?

Packaged Chex Mix snacks are not gluten-free, and therefore should be avoided by people who have dietary issues with gluten. It’s best to stick with products clearly labeled as gluten-free or make your own gluten-free Chex mix at home.
